Brazil, China to Discuss Poverty Reduction, Social Programs

The Chinese delegation attended in Brazil''s capital city Brasilia a seminar named "China-Brazil: Widening the Agenda of Cooperation in Social Protection."

The seminar was held by the International Policy Center for Inclusive Growth (IPC-IG), a project jointly established by the United Nations Development Program and the Brazilian government in 2004.

According to IPC-IG Coordinator Melissa Andrade, Brazil and China have much to learn from each other on fighting poverty and social inequality, as they are both big and complex countries.

China, meanwhile, is praised by the UN for having the most successful poverty reduction program in the world.

"We are curious to hear from them (the Chinese delegation) how the administration of such a large population is operating and what are the relations between the people and the government," she said.

During the visit, the Chinese delegation is also expected to meet several Brazilian officials, including Agricultural Development Minister Guilherme Cassel and interim Strategic Affairs Secretary Daniel Barcelos Vargas and to have meetings with representatives from the Social Development Ministry.
