Urban White-Collar Workers Enjoy "Freeter" Life

If you are a white-collar worker with a college degree, take temporary jobs rather than permanent ones, and take long breaks between these jobs, you are living a "freeter" life, like many other urban youth in China.

The word "freeter" comes from a combination of "free" and "arbeiter" — German for blue collar worker. It's becoming a popular way of life in big cities across China.

Although gaining respect from society for their personal choice, an increasing number of freeters lament the fact that modern citizens work solely for money and not for fun.

Nowadays it's common for college students to become white-collar workers immediately after graduation. The constant pressures of work deprive them of adequate and quality spare time. This motivates many to escape from the constant stress and take up a freeters existence. In between jobs, most of them spend their savings on travel.

However, as they grow older, this unstable way of life could prevent them from obtaining real happiness, some experts suggest. What young people should do is to try to maintain a balance between leisure time and their career, in this way they can make long-term and successful plans.
